Explicit solutions to a convection-reaction equation and defects of numerical schemes

چکیده
We develop a theoretical tool to examine the properties of numerical schemes for advection equations. To magnify the defects of a scheme we consider a convection-reaction equation 0021-9 doi:10. q Th * Co E-m ut þ ðjujq=qÞx 1⁄4 u; u; x 2 R; t 2 Rþ; q > 1: It is shown that, if a numerical scheme for the advection part is performed with a splitting method, the intrinsic properties of the scheme are magnified and observed easily. From this test we observe that numerical solutions based on the Lax–Friedrichs, the MacCormack and the Lax–Wendroff break down easily. These quite unexpected results indicate that certain undesirable defects of a scheme may grow and destroy the numerical solution completely and hence one need to pay extra caution to deal with reaction dominant systems. On the other hand, some other schemes including WENO, NT and Godunov are more stable and one can obtain more detailed features of them using the test. This phenomenon is also similarly observed under other methods for the reaction part. 2006 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Explicit solutions of a convection-reaction equation and defects of difference schemes
We introduce two kinds of explicit solutions to the convection-reaction equation, ut + (|u| /q)x = u, u, x ∈ R, t ∈ R , q > 1, and employ them to test properties of various computational schemes. From this test we observe that computed solutions using Lax-Friedrichs, MacCormack and Lax-Wendroff schemes break down in a finite time. On the other hand some other schemes including WENO, NT and Godu...
متن کاملNonstandard explicit third-order Runge-Kutta method with positivity property
When one solves differential equations, modeling physical phenomena, it is of great importance to take physical constraints into account. More precisely, numerical schemes have to be designed such that discrete solutions satisfy the same constraints as exact solutions. Based on general theory for positivity, with an explicit third-order Runge-Kutta method (we will refer to it as RK3 method) pos...
متن کاملInstability of Numerical Schemes for a Convection-reaction Equation
In this report we observe several undesired behaviors of numerical schemes for the Burgers equation with a linear source term. Numerical solutions based on a splitting method are compared to exact solutions of the problem. method. From several examples we observe how some unexpected properties of numerical schemes grow and how they can be neutralized.

In this study, a numerical solution of 2D steady incompressible lid-driven cavity flow is presented. Three different numerical schemes were employed to make a comparison on the practicality of the methods. An alternating direction implicit scheme for the vorticity-stream function formulation, explicit and implicit schemes for the primitive variable formulation of governing Navier-Stokes equatio...
متن کاملPositivity-preserving nonstandard finite difference Schemes for simulation of advection-diffusion reaction equations
Systems in which reaction terms are coupled to diffusion and advection transports arise in a wide range of chemical engineering applications, physics, biology and environmental. In these cases, the components of the unknown can denote concentrations or population sizes which represent quantities and they need to remain positive. Classical finite difference schemes may produce numerical drawback...
